Great news! The Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme has had a really successful quarter. From July to September, we received industry recognition for a whole range of work - from investment performance to our tools and services. We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved and we wanted to share the best bits with you.

Great returns highlighted

It all kicked off in July when two KiwiSaver industry surveys – the Melville Jessup Weaver investment survey and Morningstar survey – highlighted how well our Growth Fund performed over the previous year.

The total 1-year return for our Growth Fund (after fees and before tax) was 15.3% - a great result, and one that saw us placed at number one in the growth fund category in Melville Jessup Weaver’s survey and number two in Morningstar’s aggressive fund category. Not a bad start to the quarter.

New Responsible Investment solution launched

And things would only get better in July, when we launched a new investment solution for the Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme, designed to ensure we can actively address the responsible investment concerns of our members.

The new solution is an underlying fund - designed and built by our in-house investment management team and used by all the Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme funds that invest in global shares - which removes indirect investment exposure in controversial weapons, tobacco and whaling industries.

The new fund also embeds responsible investment at the security selection level, while improving tax efficiency and providing greater flexibility and potentially better market returns.

Funds certified as responsibly invested

Following on from the launch of this new underlying fund, we were delighted when, in September, each of our Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme investment funds were independently certified by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA). This makes Kiwi Wealth the only default KiwiSaver provider to have all of its funds verified as responsibly invested.

RIAA certification is the gold standard for responsible investment in Australasia. It provides a simple, independent and trusted way for our members to know their money is being invested in a way that will not only get strong returns, but help contribute to a better world and a better New Zealand.

While this certification is a recognition of our bona fide responsible investment offering, we’ve been meeting a lot of the requirements for certification for a long time, so this is mainly a reflection of the high standards to which we’ve always held ourselves across our investment and reporting processes.

Award recognition

Our innovative online tool Future You was hailed at the Workplace Savings NZ Awards 2017 in September, where it won two awards: the Excellence in Communication Award - for demonstrating simple, easy-to-read, consumer-focused communication - and the Best Overall KiwiSaver Member Experience Award, awarded to the KiwiSaver product, communication or service which offers the best consumer experience.

This was a fantastic result and a reflection of what we believe to be Future You’s potentially game-changing role in the way Kiwis approach retirement planning.

Our SuperRatings’ super rating

And finally, we were also delighted to learn that the Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme received, for the fourth year in a row, a Platinum Rating for ‘Outstanding value for money’ by SuperRatings, an Australasian superannuation industry specialist.

Every year SuperRatings analyse over 27 KiwiSaver schemes and award their ratings based on each scheme’s ‘value for money’. The ‘best value for money’ schemes receive a Platinum rating.

All of this represents a lot of hard work by a lot of people, so we wanted to give a shout out to everyone at Kiwi Wealth who made these achievements possible! Congrats!
