Can I transfer my UK pension to KiwiSaver?

Changes to the qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme (QROPS) rules in 2015 resulted in all KiwiSaver schemes losing their QROPS status from 6 April 2015.

From 6 April 2015, UK legislative changes mean for a scheme to have QROPS status it must prevent withdrawals of UK transferred funds before the age of 55, except in the case of serious illness.

KiwiSaver schemes are required by New Zealand law to permit withdrawals for first home purchasers or in specified hardship circumstances, amongst a limited number of other categories of early withdrawals permitted under the KiwiSaver Act 2006.

This means that from 6 April 2015 KiwiSaver schemes no longer qualify as QROPS.
